Profile

 

After graduating from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1985, Gordon returned to Barbados to work as an architect with a leading architectural firm for four years. He co-founded the architectural practice TAG Ltd in 1993 where he was architect, partner and director for eleven years designing several major residential and commercial projects. In 2006 he started the firm- Gordon Ashby Architect Ltd.

 

As President of the Barbados Institute of Architects from 2001 until 2003, he was instrumental in facilitating the passing of the Barbados Architects Registration Act . He is registered in Barbados as Architect 001 and as a board member of the Barbados  Architects Registration Board  he participated in the mission to Europe in 2011 where as a part of Association of Commonwealth Societies of Architects in the Caribbean, ACSAC ,and the Federation of Caribbean Associations of Architects, FCAA , he visited France, Brussels and London to discuss the European Partnership Agreement, EPA. In London, talks were held with Royal Institute of British Architecture, RIBA , the British Architects Registration Board, ARB and the Commonwealth Association of Architects, CAA.  In France, talks were held with the International Union of Architects, UIA.  This important initiative will facilitate Caribbean architects working in Europe and vice versa while agreeing the terms on which this will happen.   

 

Working with other consultants, he particularly enjoys commercial projects, residential renovations and especially new residential design. From modest projects to luxury high end villas, his work has been featured in Architecture Caribbean magazine and other publications and has been shot by noted New York photographer Floyd Blackette.

 

As an avid artist at heart, he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Barbados Arts Council . His interest in classical architecture and heritage conservation has led him to be a council member of the Barbados National Trust for several years where he serves on the Sentinel Committee. Gordon is also a member of the Town and Country Planning Advisory Committee. He is a regular guest critic at the Associate Degree Programme in Architecture at the Barbados Community College and an associate member of the Town and Country Planning Society of Barbados.

He is a part of some online communities such as Poplar Network, World ArchitectureFacebook and LinkedIn which allows him to network with architects and environmentally conscious thinkers while promoting their work. With architects Frank Johnson, Liz Quintyne, Abigail Pilgrim and Denise Boxhill, Gordon is part of Consortia- a group dedicated to providing the highest quality contemporary architecture design and service.
